It's all about the title. First time around, Eminem established his alter ego, Slim Shady -- the character who deliberately shocked and offended millions, turning Eminem into a star. Second time at bat, he turned out The Marshall Mathers LP, delving deeper into his past while revealing complexity as an artist and a personality that helped bring him an even greater audience and much, much more controversy. Third time around, it's The Eminem Show -- a title that signals that Eminem's public persona is front and center, for the very first time. And it is, as he spends much of the album commenting on the media circus that dominated on his life ever since the release of Marshall Mathers. This, of course, encompasses many, many familiar subjects -- his troubled childhood; his hatred of his parents; his turbulent relationship with his ex-wife, Kim (including the notorious incident when he assaulted a guy who allegedly kissed her -- the event that led to their divorce); his love of his daughter, Hailie; and, of course, all the controversy he generated, notably the furor over his alleged homophobia and his scolding from Lynne Cheney, which leads to furious criticism about the hypocrisy of America and its government. All this is married to a production very similar to that of its predecessor -- spare, funky, fluid, and vibrant, punctuated with a couple of ballads along the way. So, that means The Eminem Show is essentially a holding pattern, but it's a glorious one -- one that proves Eminem is the gold standard in pop music in 2002, delivering stylish, catchy, dense, funny, political music that rarely panders (apart from a power ballad "Dream On" rewrite on "Sing for the Moment" and maybe the sex rap "Drips," that is). Even if there is little new ground broken, the presentation is exceptional -- Dre never sounds better as a producer than when Eminem pushes him forward (witness the stunning oddity "Square Dance," a left-field ****c with an ominous waltz beat) and, with three albums under his belt, Eminem has proven himself to be one of the all-time ****c MCs, surprising as much with his delivery as with what he says. Plus, the undercurrent of political anger -- not just attacking Lynne Cheney, but raising questions about the Bush administration -- gives depth to his typical topics, adding a new, spirited dimension to his shock tactics as notable as the deep sentimental streak he reveals on his odes to his daughter. Perhaps the album runs a little too long at 20 songs and 80 minutes and would have flowed better if trimmed by 25 minutes, but that's a typical complaint about modern hip-hop records. Fact is, it still delivers more great music than most of its peers in rock or rap, and is further proof that Eminem is an artist of considerable range and dimension.

I'm undecided on this one, but am giving it a listen now to help me decide. IMO, the album deserves a nomination... great lyrics, great production, great subject matter.

YES

I absolutely love this album but I bet I'll be the only Yes vote in here

My only issue with the album is the end. It should have ended with 'Till I Collapse and put My Dad's Gone Crazy somewhere else or eliminate it all together. It would have been the best ending to an Eminem album...

This album often does switch between Marshall Mathers LP as being my favorite too.

I remember getting this and bumpin the hell out of it when it came out. I enjoyed it at the time but it seemed to be a step down from MMLP. Em's 'humour' got more childish and things got a bit too much autobiographical and self-involved. Beats weren't as hittin neither. Plus for the next couple of years I had to put up with all the Superman dance remixes made on a PC by the superstar DJs of the neighbourhood.

No.

I actually consider Em's most mature album, or at least the beginning of his maturation.

I meant less angry and "eff everyone" attitude.  Songs like Hailie's Song and Sing for the Moment.  He still raps angry, I just felt he moved away from the whole "look at me I'm insane" and became more "look at me I can rap about a bunch of different things and diversify"

"All this time me and Dre been ****ing with hats off!!" yeah, real mature :| TES is full stupid jokes like that . . . I like the album, but in terms of maturity, Em is still doing the same ish. Only thing that changed is the tone and style. Not the substance.

The tone and style changes don't lend themselves to being part of an artists maturity?

Not really, unless you merely mean mature in the sense of a natural progression or development . . . which really is an uber weak form of maturity.

It's uber weak because it saps maturity of any actual meaning as a concept.

Rob, you need to step off that elitist pedestal that you and Colt are on. That whole "this is weak in my opinion, so it IS weak" argument is played out and really has no selling point. The dynamic of maturity that Apoc brought up is just as respectable as the one you're bringing up. And relying on denotation is pointless -- connotation is just as important, as are the various meanings words have to different people. If maturity isn't to you what it is to Apoc then that is the bottom line... Where is the point in arguing over perception?

As far as maturity in Em's albums goes, this and MMLP are the most mature IMO, but I wouldn't say either is more mature than the other. They address different subjects and different topics and are snapshots of different periods of his life. As far as diversity goes, this is the more diverse effort in terms of subject matter to me.

Yes, because I said things that have been proven in every way possible are on the same level as someon's opinion... if what you were saying was actually FACT, then you could jump to the extreme you just jumped to and make your sarcastic remark, but what you were saying and what you and Colt usually say are both based off of your opinion(s). The denotation of maturity does not dictate the meaning of the concept/word to other people, period. That's all I'll say about that...

it is proven that the earth revolves around the sun....

Only proven based on the assumption that the material world actually exists . . .

*proceeds to take the argument to include metaphysical points about immaterialism that are in no way germane to TES. Succeeds in confusing Apoc. Brings the argument back down*

Here we go...

You're actually proving my point by bringing in the metaphysical. You were just indirectly underlining the strength of denotations and the power they hold - very concrete, written-in-stone type things - in the maturity discussion, but are now willing to question the underlying findings of the scientific world - things that have been given ridiculous amounts of credibility. If those can be questioned, how can you even imply that the definition of a word dictates what it means and what its "concept" is?

You obviously didn't understand the angle I was coming from. You were ready to question the most solidified theories of the scientific world, but not the meaning of a word. There is something wrong with that. One of the most widely respected ideas ever can be questioned, but something of the written language, arguably the most free, constantly-changing elements of our society, and its definition are set in stone and are unquestionable?

your confusing language and concepts . . . and fail to realize that all science is based on the giant assumption that the material world actually exists, which, believe it or not, is a HUGE ****ing leap. You remove the underlying assumptions of science, the whole thing crumbles. But guess what, the concept of what is "science" will still remain in tact. Even if you call it jiggaboodancingritual, the concept itself will be unaltered. Same goes for maturity.

Oh and nice Argumentum ad populum "Science is right because it is well respected!" LAFF

Rob just owned this thread ten fold

The answer is no obviously. This album defined my childhood back in 7th/8th grade, but listening to it now it's not nearly as good as it used to be.
